Well, I’ve recently retired and I needed something to do with my time. I tried playing golf everyday, but after a while, I realized that wasn’t what I wanted out of retirement. Don’t get me wrong, golfing is great… I just needed to do something with more purpose. So I was standing on the tee box of the 15th hole (it’s a 205-yard par 3, which I will never par) and started to think about how I can make a difference in the world. Then it came to me – why not use my knowledge and experience to help the thousands of families wrestling with the thought of moving their aging relatives in to a nursing home?
I spent a good deal of my career, both as an employee and a business owner, helping seniors and their families in one capacity or another. I’ve sold products like Walk-In Tubs, Stair Lifts and other medical-related senior products. I’ve talked with numerous families about moving their parents or loved ones into nursing homes. However, in all my years of talking with families dealing with the issues of caring for their parents, and seniors trying to afford the costs of aging, I never found a single resource that can bring it all together. There really isn’t a one-stop-shop, get-all-your-advice-in-one-place for this stage of your life. There are numerous resources for all your other life-stage changes – going to college, marriage, buying your first house, having a baby, moving to your second house and even retirement. But when it comes time to move into a retirement home, the only resource available is the retirement home salesman. And guess what he’s going to tell you.
So, I started Seniors-Staying-Home.com to help combat the retirement home salesman. Yes, sometimes there are other options. You really need to think of moving to a senior retirement home or assisted living facility like this – it’s expensive. If there is a product you can buy for $6000 that will keep you out of a nursing home for 3 months, it paid for itself. Nursing homes can average over $3000 per month. In a nutshell, that’s what this website and this blog are about – Can you avoid the retirement home for just a little while longer?
Hopefully, I’ll be able to bring a little sound advice, a little knowledge and a little experience to your situation. I’m not going to try to sell you nursing homes. No, the purpose of this site is to try to keep you in your home. At the very least, I hope to make you aware of all the options. If it’s time to go to the retirement home, then it’s time. Your family doesn’t need any additional burdens. But if you think you have a few more months or years, use this site as a tool or resource for information.
This stage of your life is a difficult one, but you still have to make the most of it. Please make sure you make the right decision for your whole family.
